The Old Stone House Museum This site is worth the visit! Included are a series of excellent publications in support of community-based teaching.
"I like the way the Stone House still looms up on that hilltop, where the wind blows all the time. There it sits, unshaken and monolithic, as I write this sentence and as you read it, every bit as astonishing today as the day it was completed.
What a tribute to the faith of its creator, the Reverend Alexander Twilight: scholar, husband, teacher, preacher, legislator, father-away-from-home to nearly 3,000 boys and girls, an African American and a Vermonter of great vision, whose remains today lie buried in the church-yard just up the maple-lined dirt road from his granite school, in what surely was, and still is, one of the last best places anywhere." Vital Communities is a regional nonprofit organization based in White River Junction, VT, that works to engage citizens in community life and to foster the long-term balance of cultural, economic, environmental and social well being in our region. Valley Vital Signs draws people together to consider and improve the quality of life for all in our region. We catalyze ideas, convene people and facilitate meetings to move ideas into action. We are currently focusing on the topics of transportation, housing, and agriculture. Valley Quest is a remarkable series of treasure hunts, based on a 150-year-old British model, that lead to our region's unique places. Developed by schools, community groups and individuals, old mills, waterfalls, cemeteries, one-room schoolhouses and other community treasures become the settings for discovery and learning. Community Profiles are facilitated single or multi-town forums where residents come together to find solutions to common concerns and to reach agreement on specific steps to make goals a reality. Results have ranged from a town directory in Haverhill, to a Conservation Commission in Barnard, an active trails group in Plainfield, and a revival of Old Home Day in Grantham. Project Citizen co-sponsored by the Center for Civic Education and the National Conference of State Legislatures, is a civic education program for middle school students that promotes competent and responsible participation in state and local government. It actively engages students in learning how to monitor and influence public policy and encourages civic participation among students, their parents, and members of the community. As a class project, students work together to identify and study a public policy issue, eventually developing an action plan for implementing their policy. The final product is a portfolio displaying each groups work. In a culminating activity the class presents its portfolio in a simulated legislative hearing, demonstrating their knowledge and understanding of how public policy is formulated. Classes may also be able to enter their portfolios in a local competition with other classes. Local winners submit their portfolios for a statewide competition, and state winners go on to be evaluated in the Project Citizen national finals. Contact: Bill@mhs.mps.k12.vt.us, Bill Haines
