Sugaring with Howard Cutts

by Aislinn Smith, Max Perry and James Francy

We went to Howard Cutt's house to learn how to sugar... We did chores like stacking wood, emptying buckets, tapping tress and helping boil. Stacking wood was really neat because we stood on a long plank and took wood from both sides of the pile. It was getting lower and lower...

Another chore was emptying buckets into the tractor. That was fun because carrying the buckets was exciting, You picked them up and if they were really full they spilled all over you and you got a sap bath...

When you tap trees you have to get the tap into the tree before a lot of the sap is wasted. Then you have to put the bucket on the hook before the sap comes through the tap and falls to the ground. Boiling was really fun because the steam that came up smelled good and was hot...There are a lot of details to take care of when you do sugaring. Howard said that his favorite part of sugaring is letting the syrup come down through the pipeline.
