The Institute worked because simply, or magnificently if you will, it modeled a magical paradigm of the ultimate service learning experience.
We served, we learned, we reflected, we werewe arecommunity.
Beverly Maddox Moon, Associate Professor of English
Delta State University, Cleveland, Mississippi
Study Groups provide participants with the opportunity to share their projects and enjoy feedback, suggestions and support from fellow participants. Past participants have noted that this is one of the most useful and exciting opportunities at the Institute.
"In those few days in Vermont other people’s kindness and strength, their commitment to community service learning and the Institute that brought them all together renewed my faith in human power.
We were all working on things that mattered."
Sherine Hafez, Teacher
Cairo American College (K-12), Egypt
We emphasize the use of service-learning best practices including interactive trainings and opportunities for dialogue with experienced practitioners. Structured planning and reflection time is provided for individual and group work to support participant needs.
Experienced practitioners share curriculum exemplars, resources and teaching tools. Curriculum exemplars drawn from the field are used to illustrate the ways in which service-learning can become an integrated feature of curriculum with clearly articulated connections to state standards.
Participants develop an integrated service-learning curriculum and/or site plan to meet their own educational goals. Implementation support is available via email or telephone. Participants Comment
Graduate Credit Option: The Institute may be taken for 3 graduate credits with the expectation that participants will submit a complete curriculum or "site" plan that directly applies their institute experience and learning.
Local Institutes: Community Works will also work with you on a local site based version of our national Institute. Local summer institutes must be scheduled at least six months in advance and can be customized to suit individual needs.
